Kambó,The frog that cures

Kambo, also called blue-and-yellow frog, bicoloured tree-frog or giant monkey frog, is a tree frog living in the Amazon rainforest. The scientific name for this frog is Phyllomedusa bicolor. This frog secretes a powerful poison from its skin that is it used by many tribes for curing different physical and emotional diseases. Kambo has been studied for its pharmacological potential and it is on the rise as an alternative treatment for depression and drug dependency.

In his research, Giovanni Lattanzi says, “Kambo is one of the strongest natural antibiotics and anesthetics found in the world and one of the strongest, natural ways to empower our immune system”. This is because the poison contains many peptides that are beneficial to the human body.

These include the potent opioids Dermorphin and Deltorphin – each many times stronger than morphine. Some of these traverse the blood-brain barrier and stimulate the endocrine glands of the brain, resulting in an immune effect and a deep cleanse of the body.

How is the treatment process?

Tribe members accompanied with shamans go to the jungle to find these Kambo frogs which are normally near the trees. They find them and next capture them. Although the frogs are extremely poisonous, they don’t usually react when captured because they don’t have any natural predators in the jungle. They have evolved and developed its poison to protect themselves against other animals.

To extract the secretion from the frog’s skin, the frog is positioned into the shape of an X, this means, with its limbs tied to sticks with string. This could sound cruel, but after releasing the poison on its back, the frog is freed. And even it is hard to believe the frog is not harmed during the process and is released in perfect health. The secretion is crystallized onto wooden sticks to be used later.

The ‘medicine’ is applied by burning tiny holes in the first two or three layers of the skin using a stick (typically it is a series of small circles burned into the upper arm). The dried serum is mixed with water and a small amount is rubbed into each burn. After the epidermis is scorched off the effect is immediate and it can have a deeply cleansing effect, as it runs in the body through the lymphatic system.
